Helane Morrison is a woman committed to justice and fairness. She has been working for more than 30 years to ensure that consumers are protected and businesses follow all requisite regulations. Morrison has been preparing herself to do this for years. After earning a degree in journalism from Northwestern University, she graduated from UC Berkley law school with a Juris doctor. While there Morrison was editor-in-chief of the California Law Review. She further enhanced her skills by working as a clerk for Appeals Court Judge Richard Posen and Justice Harry Blackmun of the U.S. Supreme Court for one year each.
In 1986, Helane Morrison was hired by Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin, a California law firm. She stayed there for 10 years, becoming a partner in 1991.
While there she focused on private securities actions, Securities and Exchange Commission related matters and business litigation. She left the law firm in 1996 to lead the SEC’s San Francisco office. Three years later she was promoted to regional director of the SEC. That position put her in charge of fraud litigation, regulatory issues and securities law enforcement for five Northwestern states and Northern California.
At the SEC Morrison gained a reputation for defending the rights of consumers, protecting elderly consumers from fraud and bringing cases against major companies suspected of wrong doing. She also took steps to warn consumers about the possible dangers of online trading websites and illegal trading rings. Morrison also brought cases against morally bankrupt investment brokers. Plus she uncovered the selling to military personnel of fraudulent securities, exposed auditors from major companies illegally destroying audit papers and fought to eradicate insider trading.
In 2007, Helane Morrison left the SEC and became investment company Hall Capital Partners chief compliance officer and general counsel. Her job was to ensure integrity, accountability and regulatory compliance in all of the company’s dealings. The company was so impressed with the quality of her work, they promoted Morrison to managing director and gave her a position on the executive board. Her legal background and her work with the SEC made her perfectly prepared for the position. Morrison has been a great fit with what is among California’s most successful investment companies.
Helane Morrison has proven to be a tireless fighter for fair play in business and has done her part to help improve the confidence of the public in the financial markets.
